- LETTERS, Page 17Harlem on My Mind

- I was delighted to read about New York City's "New Harlem"
- (TRAVEL, April 24). Harlem seems to offer a myriad of enchanting
- and tantalizing possibilities. In spite of its label as a place of
- crime and poverty, Harlem is a real Aladdin's lamp: rub the right
- spots, and you can summon its cultural and historical treasures.

- As a Harlem resident, I was intrigued by your mention of tours
- of Harlem. I was disturbed, however, by the recommendation to
- attend Sunday church services. I dislike being treated as a
- curiosity when I am worshiping. Tourists in Harlem ought not to
- treat the African-American religious experience as a source of
- entertainment and amusement. Black churches should be accorded the
- same degree of respect as any other.
